چکیده

With developments in voice over IP (VoIP), IP-based wireless data networks and their application services have received increased attention. While multimedia applications of mobile nodes are served by Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as a signaling protocol, the mobility of mobile nodes may be supported via Mobile IP protocol. For a mobile node that uses both Mobile IP and SIP, there is a severe redundant registration overhead because the mobile node has to make location registration separately to a home agent for Mobile IP and to a home registrar for SIP, respectively. Therefore, we propose two new schemes that integrate mobility management functionality in Mobile IP and SIP. We show performance comparisons among the previous method, which makes separate registration for Mobile IP and SIP without integration, and our two integrated methods. Numerical results show that the proposed methods efficiently reduce the amount of signaling messages and delay time related to the idle handoff and the active handoff.

Mobility Management Based on the Integration of Mobile IP and Session Initiation Protocol in Next Generation Mobile Data Networks

For a mobile node that uses both Mobile IP and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), there is severe redundant registration overhead because the mobile node has to make location registration separately to the Home Agent for Mobile IP and to the Home Registrar for SIP. Therefore, we propose two new IP mobility management methods that integrate both Mobile IP and SIP. Performance comparisons are mad...

A multilayered mobility management scheme for auto-configured wireless IP networks

1 All authors are with Telcordia Technologies except Henning Schulzrinne, who is with Columbia University. Ravi Jain was with Telcordia Technologies and is now with NTT DoCoMo Labs. Abstract The convergence of wireless and Internet Protocol (IP) has led to the need for IP to handle mobility. The Mobile IP protocol was developed to facilitate IP mobility. However, it has a number of shortcomings...

Application-centric analysis of IP-based mobility management techniques

This paper considers three applicationsVoIP, mobile Web access and mobile server-based data transfersand evaluates the applicability of various IP-based mobility management mechanisms. We first survey the features and characteristics of various IP mobility protocols, such as MIPv4, MIPv6, MIP-RO, SIP, CIP, HAWAII, MIP-RR and IDMP, and then evaluate their utility on an application-specific basis...

Fast End-to-End Mobility Support Using SIP for Vertical Handoffs in 4G Wireless Communication Networks

The mobility management is a significant issue in 4G heterogeneous networks. However, the mobility needs to be managed by upper layer in the networks because of the limitation of mobility management at link layer. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) supports personal mobility so that a user can be found independent of location and network device. But it cannot support IP mobility and cannot maint...
